In 1914, Ukrainien immigrant Bernard Gant disembarked in New York City. He started manufacturing shirts and in 1949 established GANT shirtmakers together with his two sons in New Haven. GANT became the first men´s
designer brand in the US and an overnight sensation in Ivy League campus stores. Many classic tailoring features helped make GANT shirts a cornerstone of the East Coast look that spread across the world in the ´50s and ´60s. In 1980, Lennart Björk, Klas Käll and Staffan Wittmark, three Swedish entrepreneurs, obtained the licensing rights for GANT in Sweden. It is these three Swedish entrepreneurs who are behind the international success of the brand. The Swedish company acquired the brand in 1999, and in 2006 GANT was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.
Since the first shirt was made in 1949 in New Haven, Connecticut, GANT has developed into a lifestyle brand with retailers in over 70 countries, including 600 GANT Stores and a number of selected premium retailers.
The brand incorporates GANT Man, GANT Woman, GANT Boys, GANT Girls, GANT Baby, GANT Home, as well as Time, Fragrance, Footwear and Eyewear licenses under the GANT name. Every single item reflects the unique combination of an American heritage with a European touch.
